European Commission warns Romania: Financial risks due to PNRR delays
The European Commission has sent an official warning to the authorities in Bucharest regarding the implementation of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). European officials are concerned about recent decisions made in the Romanian Parliament, which could jeopardize the objectives assumed through this funding program.
The main point of conflict is the modification of the timeline for closing coal-fired power plants. Parliament has voted for changes that postpone the originally established deadlines, a measure that contradicts the commitments made by Romania to the European Union for the transition to greener energy.
Representatives of the European Commission have emphasized that failure to meet these deadlines can have serious financial consequences for the country. Specifically, Romania risks losing significant amounts of money from the allocated European funds, as funding is directly linked to achieving clear reform and environmental protection targets.
This situation creates tensions between Bucharest and Brussels at a time when PNRR investments are essential for the development of infrastructure and the national economy. The government will have to find quick solutions to realign national legislation with European requirements if it wants to avoid the blocking of payments.
In the coming period, technical discussions will take place between representatives of Romania and experts from the European Commission. The objective of these negotiations is to clarify the steps necessary for the country to remain on the established schedule and not lose the European financial support needed for the modernization of the energy system.
