Trade union alliance warns: Blocking CFR SA funding could lead to a crisis in rail transport
The ELCATEL trade union alliance has launched an urgent appeal to Romania's political leaders, requesting the immediate unblocking of budget funding for the national company CFR SA. Union representatives argue that the current financial situation of the railway infrastructure manager has become critical and requires swift measures from the authorities.
According to the union members, the lack of necessary funds could trigger a dangerous chain reaction for the entire rail transport system in the country. They warn that without a capital injection, maintenance work and current repairs on the railways could be suspended, which would directly affect the safety and movement of trains on national routes.
CFR SA's financial problems are closely linked to the proper functioning of passenger and freight transport. Currently, delays and the state of the infrastructure already pose major challenges for passengers in Romania, and a budget freeze could exacerbate these difficulties, leading to cancellations of trips or the imposition of additional speed restrictions on degraded rail segments.
In this context, employee representatives are calling for a legislative or administrative solution that would allow the company to continue its operations under safe conditions. They emphasize that investments in railway infrastructure are essential for the country's connectivity and for meeting European commitments regarding sustainable mobility.
For the time being, government authorities have not provided a detailed official response regarding the ELCATEL alliance's request. It remains to be seen how this situation will evolve in the coming period and whether the necessary resources will be identified to avoid a major crisis in the Romanian rail sector.
