Digitalization of hospitals in Romania: A new step towards connecting medical systems
The medical system in Romania is entering a new stage of modernization. After significant investments in IT infrastructure and various information systems over the last few years, authorities are now focusing on an essential objective: hospital interoperability.
On Thursday, September 24, the first meeting of the national working group dedicated to this subject took place. The main goal of this group is to find solutions through which the databases of different hospitals can communicate with each other. Currently, many medical units use systems that are not compatible, which hinders doctors' access to patient history.
Interoperability means that a patient's medical information, such as lab results, prescriptions, or medical history, will be accessible quickly and securely by any doctor, regardless of the hospital they are in. This will reduce waiting times and help doctors make better decisions for patient treatment.
Specialists present at the discussions emphasized that complete digitalization does not just mean buying new computers, but creating a unified network. This change will bring direct benefits to patients, who will no longer have to carry physical files from one clinic to another.
The project is still in its early stages, but authorities promise that this working group will continue to meet to establish the necessary technical standards. The implementation of this integrated digital system represents an important step in bringing medicine in Romania up to current European standards.
