Resource productivity in Romania: A worrying stagnation over the last quarter-century
Recent data provided by Eurostat reveal a difficult economic reality for Romania. While the European Union has made significant progress in terms of resource use efficiency, our country has remained at the same level for the past 25 years.
According to the analysis conducted for the 2000-2025 period, resource productivity at the European Union level has increased by approximately 50%. This growth reflects the efforts of member states to produce more economic value using fewer raw materials, a central pillar of the circular economy and sustainability.
In contrast, Romania has failed to improve this indicator, remaining on a path of stagnation. This situation suggests that the Romanian economy continues to depend on high resource consumption to generate economic growth, unlike the European trend of optimizing energy and material consumption.
Experts warn that this discrepancy could become a long-term problem. Without modernizing industrial processes and transitioning to more efficient technologies, Romania risks falling behind its European partners, becoming more vulnerable to fluctuations in natural resource prices.
In conclusion, the Eurostat figures represent an alarm signal for the authorities in Bucharest. To close the gap with the European average, it is necessary to implement clear strategies that encourage innovation and the responsible use of resources across all economic sectors.
