Romania invests hundreds of millions of euros in European military technology
Romania has already begun allocating significant funds, amounting to hundreds of millions of euros, for the acquisition and development of modern military technology. These investments are being made through the European SAFE program, which aims to strengthen the defense capabilities of European Union member states.
Projects primarily target the acquisition of high-performance drones and "loitering" munitions, also known as kamikaze drones. This equipment is essential in the current geopolitical context, providing the military with advanced surveillance and precision strike capabilities against enemy targets.
However, there are warning signs regarding the involvement of the local industry in this process. Although Romania is investing considerable sums, no Romanian firm has managed, up to this point, to be included in the European defense accelerator. Experts argue that integrating Romanian technology into European supply chains would bring long-term economic benefits. Without a clear strategy to support national innovation, Romania risks remaining merely a buyer of foreign technology, without developing the expertise necessary to produce its own defense solutions.
