Government proposes a "Digitalization CEO" to modernize Romania's public administration
The Romanian government has recently announced an ambitious new plan to modernize state institutions. The main proposal aims to centralize all digital transformation processes under the coordination of a single specialized structure, which will operate under the direct authority of the executive branch.
This initiative introduces the concept of a "Digitalization CEO," a role created to ensure unified and efficient leadership of technology within public administration. Authorities aim to eliminate excessive bureaucracy and simplify how citizens interact with the state by using modern digital tools.
Currently, digitalization in Romania is fragmented, with each institution managing its own IT systems. The new structure would connect these databases, facilitating the exchange of information between ministries and agencies. The ultimate goal is for Romanians to be able to obtain documents and pay taxes online much faster, without the need for physical presence at counters.
Experts argue that this step is essential for aligning Romania with European e-government standards. However, the success of this project depends on technical implementation and the training of public institution staff to use the new digital platforms.
The government is set to detail the concrete steps for implementing this program in the coming period. If successfully implemented, this "Digitalization CEO" could radically change the way the Romanian state functions, offering more accessible services for all citizens.
