Romania, among the European countries with the lowest obesity rate, but with many overweight adults
A recent report on the health of the population in the European Union shows a contrasting situation for Romania. Although our country ranks third in the European bloc in terms of the lowest obesity rate, the figures regarding excess weight among adults remain worrying.
According to official data, approximately 62.3% of adults in Romania are dealing with weight above normal limits. This statistic places Romania in an area of concern for health authorities, even if the number of people clinically diagnosed with obesity is lower compared to other European states.
Specialists explain that there is an important difference between being overweight and suffering from obesity. Although many Romanians exceed their ideal weight, they do not yet reach the thresholds that define severe obesity, which explains Romania's favorable position in the European obesity ranking.
However, doctors warn that excess weight, even in mild forms, can lead over time to serious health problems, such as cardiovascular diseases or diabetes. A sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits are the main factors contributing to the increase in the number of adults with extra pounds.
In conclusion, although Romania is doing better than many other European countries when it comes to obesity, the high percentage of overweight people represents a warning signal. Authorities and nutrition experts recommend adopting a balanced diet and increasing physical activity to improve the general health of the population.
