Bulgaria invests 30 million euros in defense startups, while Romania relies on European funds
Bulgaria recently announced the launch of a 30-million-euro investment fund aimed at supporting startups that develop technologies for the defense industry. This initiative aims to stimulate innovation in the military sector and support local companies in creating modern security solutions.
Currently, the defense industry is undergoing a period of rapid global change, and emerging technologies, such as drones or surveillance systems, are becoming essential. The government in Sofia wants to attract creative entrepreneurs who can bring added value to this strategic field by providing them with the necessary capital for development.
In contrast, Romania is taking a different approach to the development of this sector. Romanian authorities are primarily focusing on accessing grants offered by the European Union and on collaborations carried out through NATO programs. These funding sources are being used to modernize defense capabilities and integrate advanced technologies into national structures.
Although the funding methods differ, both countries are pursuing the same goal: strengthening regional security in an unstable geopolitical context. Experts emphasize that investments in research and development are vital for Eastern European states to remain competitive and prepared for future challenges.
In the long term, the success of these initiatives will depend on the companies' ability to transform innovative ideas into functional products. It remains to be seen whether the Bulgarian model of direct funding will yield faster results than the strategy based on European funds adopted by Romania.
