The Romanian art market under scrutiny: How do we protect ourselves from forgeries?
Romania is currently facing a serious problem in the art market: the number of counterfeit works has increased significantly in recent years. Experts warn that our country has become vulnerable to this phenomenon due to the lack of strict control mechanisms and the limited number of specialists capable of verifying the authenticity of works.
The main difficulty lies in the insufficient infrastructure for advanced technical investigations. Currently, many of the appraisals performed are based solely on visual analysis, which leaves room for errors or fraudulent intent. This situation affects both private collectors and the prestige of auction houses in Romania.
In this context, modern technology could offer a saving solution. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is beginning to be tested to identify forgeries by analyzing brushstrokes, composition, and materials used in detail. Algorithms can detect irregularities that the human eye might miss, thus providing an additional layer of security for buyers.
However, experts emphasize that technology cannot completely replace human expertise. A collaboration between art history specialists and new digital tools would be the most effective way to clear the market of counterfeit works and restore investor confidence.
In the long term, authorities and cultural institutions in Romania will need to invest more in training experts and equipping analysis laboratories. Protecting heritage and the art market remains a priority to prevent the country from becoming a favorable destination for the trade of forgeries.
