Mass sale of private gas stations observed in Russia
At the beginning of 2026, experts recorded a notable trend in the Russian fuel market: owners of private gas stations began putting their facilities up for sale en masse. According to analysts, there are about 27,700 gas stations in the country, and the majority of them—approximately 19,800—are owned by private entrepreneurs.
The situation in the market is of interest to specialists, as private gas stations play an important role in supplying fuel to the regions. Business owners explain their decision to sell assets due to various economic factors. At the moment, experts and government representatives, including Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak, are closely monitoring developments to assess the potential consequences for consumers.
The main reason for the sales is often linked to changing operating conditions in the fuel market. In recent years, requirements for safety, environmental standards, and the digitalization of processes at gas stations have increased significantly. For many owners of small chains, meeting these requirements necessitates major financial investments that do not always pay off under current conditions.
Despite the activity of sellers, experts note that the market continues to function as usual. Buyers of such facilities are often large oil companies seeking to expand their retail networks. This may lead to a gradual consolidation of the market and a change in the ownership structure of gas stations across the country.
In the near future, the government plans to analyze the situation to ensure that the mass sale of gas stations does not lead to fuel shortages or price increases for motorists. The authorities emphasize that the stability of gasoline and diesel fuel supplies remains a priority for the country's economy.
