Are there minerals on the Moon? Opinion of Russian experts
Today, many countries are studying the Moon not only as a scientific object but also as a potential source of valuable resources. The Federal Agency for Subsoil Use (Rosnedra) shared information about what minerals can be found on the surface of our satellite. Although the Moon seems desolate, it could play an important role in the energy of the future.
Experts note that the Moon's geological history is much simpler than Earth's. On our planet, many processes occurred due to the presence of water and the movement of tectonic plates. There were no such conditions on the Moon, so the variety of minerals there is significantly smaller. However, this does not make Earth's satellite any less interesting for researchers.
One of the most promising resources on the Moon is considered to be helium-3. This is a rare element that could become the ideal fuel for thermonuclear power plants. There is practically none of it on Earth, but it has been accumulating on the lunar surface for billions of years under the influence of solar wind. Scientists believe that helium-3 will provide humanity with clean energy for many years to come.
In addition, scientists hope to find reserves of water ice at the Moon's poles. It is hidden in deep craters where sunlight never reaches. Water is necessary not only to support the lives of future colonists but also for the production of rocket fuel. If fuel is produced directly on the Moon, flights to other planets will become much simpler and cheaper.
In the future, the Moon could turn into an important industrial base. Although resource extraction technologies in space are currently only in the development stage, interest in lunar minerals continues to grow. Exploring the satellite will help people not only obtain new materials but also better understand the history of the development of the entire Solar System.
