Russia to Officially Introduce 'Super-Obesity' Diagnosis
The Russian Ministry of Health plans to officially include a new medical diagnosis in the country's healthcare system. The term in question is "super-obesity," which will be applied to patients with critically high weight indicators.
According to the new rules, the diagnosis of "super-obesity" will be given to people whose body mass index (BMI) exceeds 50. Body mass index is a generally accepted indicator calculated as the ratio of a person's weight in kilograms to the square of their height in meters. Doctors use this method to assess whether a patient's body weight is within the normal range or deviates from it.
The introduction of a separate term is necessary so that doctors can more accurately classify the health status of patients. People with such a high BMI often face serious chronic diseases that require special medical supervision and specific treatment methods that differ from standard weight loss programs.
Experts note that identifying this category will help the state better plan medical care. This will allow patients to receive higher-quality support, including consultations with specialized experts and access to modern therapy methods necessary for combating severe forms of obesity.
It is expected that the introduction of this diagnosis into Russian practice will be an important step in the development of preventive medicine. Doctors hope that a clear classification will help identify health risks in a timely manner and offer patients effective ways to improve their quality of life.
