Russian scientists have developed a new technology for lithium extraction
Scientists from Kuban State University have presented an innovative technology that could significantly change the lithium extraction process. This development has been nominated for the prestigious "Made in Russia — 2026" award in the "Science and Technology" category.
At the core of the new technology are unique nanoporous ion-exchange membranes. The main feature of these membranes is their high resistance to the effects of calcium and magnesium. These elements often interfere with the purification and extraction of lithium, so the new development makes the process more efficient and faster.
In addition to the membranes themselves, the researchers created special advanced devices to work with them. These instruments allow for the automation of the process of extracting the valuable metal from various solutions. Thanks to this method, lithium extraction becomes not only simpler but also more economically viable.
Lithium is a critical component for the production of modern batteries used in electric vehicles, smartphones, and other equipment. Developing domestic technologies for extracting this metal is of great importance for Russian industry and the country's energy independence.
Experts note that the implementation of such developments will help Russia strengthen its position in the high-tech market. In the near future, the scientists plan to continue testing to prepare the technology for industrial use.
