Russian Embassy: France did not promise a "nuclear umbrella" to Norway
The Russian Embassy in France commented on information regarding military cooperation between Paris and Oslo. Russian diplomats stated that France has not undertaken any obligations to protect Norway using its nuclear weapons. This statement was made to clarify the situation following various rumors in the press.
Previously, some sources discussed the possibility that France might provide Norway with a so-called "nuclear umbrella." However, the Russian Embassy clarified that Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre did not actually speak about receiving such guarantees from the French side.
The term "nuclear umbrella" refers to a security system in which a nuclear power promises to use its weapons to protect an ally in the event of an attack. Although Norway is a member of NATO, the issue of specific nuclear guarantees specifically from France has not been officially raised in the way presented by some media outlets.
Russian diplomats emphasized the importance of accurately conveying the words of officials. In their view, a misunderstanding of politicians' statements can create a false impression of changes in international policy. The embassy noted that Paris has not confirmed its readiness to extend its nuclear obligations to Norwegian territory.
In conclusion, it is worth noting that issues of nuclear deterrence remain extremely sensitive in Europe. At present, official representatives of France and Norway continue to work within the framework of existing NATO agreements, without creating new bilateral nuclear alliances.
