Import duties on dietary supplements have increased in Russia: how the market will change

New rules for the import of dietary supplements (biologically active additives) came into effect in Russia at the beginning of October. According to a government decision, the import of these products from so-called "unfriendly" countries is now subject to a 35% customs duty. This decision is part of a state policy to restrict the import of goods for which domestic alternatives exist.

Experts note that the introduction of protective duties is aimed at supporting Russian manufacturers. Given the limited access to foreign goods, authorities are seeking to stimulate the localization of production within the country. It is expected that Russian companies will be able to increase the output of vitamins and dietary supplements to fill the niches opening up in the market.

For ordinary consumers, these changes may mean an increase in prices for familiar imported brands. The tariff hike will inevitably be reflected in the final cost of goods in pharmacies and specialized stores. In this regard, shoppers may have to pay more attention to products from domestic brands that are not subject to the new customs restrictions.

In the long term, the government expects that the development of domestic production will make the Russian dietary supplement market more independent of external factors. Nevertheless, the transition period may be accompanied by a temporary shortage of certain items and the restructuring of logistics chains. Specialists continue to monitor how quickly Russian enterprises will be able to increase capacity to meet public demand.
