Citizens' Excess Weight Costs the Russian Economy 1.2 Trillion Rubles

A new study by the Higher School of Economics (HSE) has shown that weight problems among Russians cause serious harm to the country's economy. According to expert estimates, annual losses amount to about 1.2 trillion rubles. This sum is equivalent to 0.7% of Russia's gross domestic product (GDP).

HSE University Professor Marina Kolosnitsyna explained that these figures include not only direct medical expenses but also indirect losses. When people fall ill due to excess weight, they take sick leave more often, work less, or retire earlier due to health conditions. This significantly reduces the overall labor productivity in the country.

The main causes of economic losses are chronic diseases associated with obesity. These include type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and musculoskeletal problems. Treating such ailments requires significant budget funds and long-term medical supervision.

Experts note that the number of overweight people in Russia continues to grow. The main factors cited are a sedentary lifestyle and the availability of products high in sugar and fat. A similar situation is observed in many countries, but for Russia, the scale of the problem is becoming a serious challenge for the healthcare system.

Specialists emphasize that the state needs to invest more in disease prevention and the promotion of sports. Reducing obesity levels among the population will help not only improve the quality and duration of citizens' lives but also save significant financial resources for the country's development.
