Fully Cyrillic email addresses are now available in Russia
Russian internet users have gained access to a new technology: email addresses can now be written entirely in Cyrillic. This applies to domain names in the .RU and .РФ zones. Previously, users could only use Cyrillic in the domain name, while the part of the address before the "at" symbol had to remain in Latin characters.
The technical update was made possible by the implementation of the EAI (Email Address Internationalization) standard. This standard allows mail servers to correctly process characters from national alphabets. Now, domain owners can create mailboxes where both the username and the domain name consist entirely of Russian letters.
Developers note that this is an important milestone for the development of the digital environment in Russia. Using one's native alphabet makes the internet more accessible and understandable for a wide range of users. Furthermore, it simplifies interaction with government and commercial services that have already transitioned to using .РФ domains.
However, experts warn that the transition to new addresses may take some time. Not all foreign email services and websites currently support Cyrillic addresses. Therefore, users are advised to maintain access to their old email accounts with Latin characters for communication with international platforms.
In the near future, it is expected that support for Cyrillic addresses will become the standard for the majority of Russian companies and government organizations. This will make online communication more convenient and personalized for millions of the country's citizens.
