Caution: Scammers disguise viruses as updates for banking apps and 'Gosuslugi'
Recently, there has been an increase in cyber fraud cases in Russia related to updates for popular services. Malicious actors are creating fake websites that look very similar to the official pages of banks or the 'Gosuslugi' (State Services) portal. On these resources, users are prompted to download an 'update' for an application, which is actually malicious software.
The goal of such attacks is to gain access to users' personal data, passwords, and bank accounts. After installing the virus on a smartphone or computer, scammers can remotely control the device or steal confidential information. Experts note that fake sites often use similar names and logos to lull citizens into a false sense of security.
The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs urges citizens to be extremely careful and follow digital safety rules. The experts' main advice is to download any applications and their updates only from official stores, such as Google Play, App Store, or RuStore. Also, do not click on suspicious links received in messages from unknown senders.
To protect yourself, experts recommend checking the browser's address bar: official websites of government agencies and major banks always have a secure connection and the correct spelling of the domain name. If you receive a notification about the need for an urgent update, it is better to go to the official app store on your device yourself and check for updates there.
Be vigilant and do not trust dubious offers on the internet. Remember that official organizations never ask users to click on third-party links to install critical security updates.
