Russia plans to ratify new UN convention on combating cybercrime
By the end of 2026, an important international document—the UN Convention on Countering the Use of Information and Communications Technologies for Criminal Purposes—will be submitted to the State Duma of the Russian Federation for consideration. This treaty is aimed at establishing uniform rules for participating countries in the sphere of countering crimes committed using information technologies.
The main goal of the new convention is to strengthen international cooperation in the fight against hackers, data theft, and other types of digital offenses. Amidst the rising number of cyberattacks worldwide, experts emphasize the need to create a legal framework that will allow countries to exchange information more effectively and jointly investigate incidents.
Russian authorities are actively participating in the development of this agreement. It is expected that once the document is submitted to parliament, the process of its detailed discussion and subsequent ratification will begin. The adoption of the convention will be an important step for Russia's integration into the global cybersecurity system.
The issue of cybercrime remains highly relevant for Russian citizens and businesses, as the number of internet fraud cases continues to grow. New international standards could help law enforcement agencies respond more quickly to threats originating from abroad and protect the interests of users in the digital space.
Thus, over the next two years, Russian legislation may change significantly in accordance with international UN standards. Further developments will depend on the progress of parliamentary hearings and the willingness of all parties to comply with the provisions of the new treaty.
