Why Russia withdrew from the OneWeb project
Experts are discussing the consequences of the FSB's decision to limit Russia's participation in the international OneWeb project. According to analysts, this move has significantly altered the country's plans for developing satellite internet and has impacted technological independence in the space industry.
The OneWeb project was conceived as a global network of satellites capable of providing high-speed internet access anywhere on the planet. Russia was initially viewed as an important partner that could have made a significant contribution to the creation of this infrastructure.
However, representatives of the FSB opposed the participation of Russian companies in this project. The primary reason was concerns related to national security and the potential use of the satellite network for intelligence gathering. As a result, the collaboration was terminated.
Technology expert Shiryaev notes that this decision deprived Russia of the opportunity to create its own analog to the Starlink system based on existing international developments. Now, the country has to seek alternative paths for satellite communications development, relying exclusively on its own resources.
At the moment, Russian specialists continue to work on creating independent data transmission systems. The question of how quickly Russia will be able to catch up with global leaders in this sphere remains open and is a subject of discussion within the professional community.
