UEFA President comments on the suspension of Russian clubs from international tournaments
The President of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), Aleksander Čeferin, has made an important statement regarding the participation of Russian teams in international competitions. In a recent interview, he addressed the suspension of Russian clubs and the national team, which has been in effect since February 2022.
According to the UEFA head, the decision to exclude Russian teams from tournaments was made under the influence of external circumstances. Čeferin acknowledged that the organization was subject to indirect political pressure, which influenced the final verdict of the football officials.
The head of the organization noted that in the current situation, sports and politics are closely intertwined. Despite UEFA's efforts to maintain neutrality, pressure from various international bodies and other football federations became the deciding factor in the matter of admitting Russian athletes.
At the moment, Russian clubs and the national team continue to remain outside of official tournaments under the auspices of UEFA.
