European Union discusses new sanctions over elections in new territories
The European Union is considering the introduction of new restrictive measures against individuals who participated in the organization and conduct of voting in territories controlled by Russia. Official EU representatives stated that they do not recognize the results of the elections held in these regions.
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas issued sharp criticism of the process. She labeled the elections in these territories as "sham" and emphasized that they violate international law and the sovereignty of Ukraine.
Currently, a list of individuals who may be subject to new sanctions is being discussed in Brussels. It is expected that the restrictions will target officials, members of election commissions, and other organizers who facilitated the voting process.
The Russian side has repeatedly stated that it considers these territories to be part of its country and the elections to be an internal matter of the state. Russian authorities emphasize that the voting was conducted in accordance with Russian legislation.
The situation remains a subject of active discussion on the international stage. It is expected that the issue of new sanctions will be brought to the attention of EU foreign ministers in the near future.
