The Russian internet is switching to autonomous operation mode

Russian authorities have announced the completion of preparations for the national segment of the internet to operate in autonomous mode. According to new data, the .RU and .рф domain zones can now function independently of the international internet management system, ICANN. This decision is aimed at ensuring the stability of the country's digital infrastructure in the event of external technical or political threats.

The technical feasibility of disconnecting from the global network has been discussed in Russia for several years. Specialists from Roskomnadzor have conducted a series of successful drills, which confirmed that Russian internet resources are capable of operating without a connection to foreign root servers. This means that even in the event of complete isolation from the external internet, access to Russian websites and government services within the country will be maintained.

Experts note that the transition to a sovereign management system is a complex process that requires constant monitoring. The main task is to ensure that users do not notice any changes in the speed or quality of the websites they are accustomed to. To this end, a national domain name system has been created, which duplicates the functions of international organizations.

Despite the technical readiness, authorities emphasize that the creation of a "sovereign internet" is merely a protective measure. The main goal of the project is to guarantee the security of citizens' data and the uninterrupted operation of critical infrastructure. In the near future, the government plans to continue testing the system to eliminate any risks for ordinary users.
