Slovakia reviews purchase of traffic cameras due to their Russian origin
The Slovak Ministry of the Interior has come under scrutiny due to plans to modernize its traffic monitoring system. The department had planned to purchase 279 speed cameras from a Cypriot company, but serious questions have arisen regarding the origin of this equipment.
According to investigation findings, the technical devices intended for delivery to Slovakia were actually manufactured in Russia. This fact has caused concern among experts and government officials, as the use of such technology in state monitoring systems could pose security risks.
One of the main issues being discussed in the media is the potential for these cameras to be used for covert data collection or espionage. Specialists fear that the devices' software could transmit information to third parties, which is unacceptable for equipment operating on the country's critical infrastructure.
At the moment, the situation remains uncertain. Slovak authorities are conducting an additional review of the contract to determine how safe it is to use Russian technology within the national security framework. A decision on whether to proceed with or cancel the deal is expected in the near future.
