Germany’s Skilled Trades Crisis Deepens as 200,000 Workers Are Missing

Germany is facing a severe shortage of workers in its skilled trades sector, with industry leaders warning that around 200,000 positions remain unfilled nationwide, highlighting a growing labor crisis across multiple professions.

The German Confederation of Skilled Crafts reported that 119,565 vacancies were officially registered with the Federal Employment Agency at the end of December. However, many businesses do not formally report openings, leading the association to estimate the real shortfall at nearly 200,000 workers.

The shortage affects a wide range of industries, including construction, metal and electrical trades, wood and plastics, clothing and leather, food production, health and personal services, and graphic and design crafts. Despite weak economic growth, most skilled craft businesses are not carrying out large-scale layoffs.

Training opportunities also remain unfilled. In 2025, around 16,213 apprenticeships in the skilled trades were left vacant across the country, although this figure was about 2,900 lower than the previous year, suggesting slight improvement but continued structural problems.

Chamber president فرانتس كزافير بيترانديرل warned that many young people and their parents still underestimate the career potential of skilled trades. He said an excessive focus on academic paths continues to overshadow the strong job security and professional opportunities available in craft professions.
