Haze Returns: Air Quality Drops to Unhealthy Levels in Singapore
Air quality in Singapore has reached the unhealthy range, particularly in the central and western parts of the island. The National Environment Agency (NEA) reported that smoke from forest fires in southern Sumatra is currently drifting towards Singapore due to changing wind directions.
This situation has caused concerns about transboundary haze, which occurs when smoke from fires in neighboring countries is carried by the wind into Singapore. Authorities are closely monitoring the air quality index (AQI) to determine if the conditions will worsen over the coming days.
Residents, especially those with pre-existing heart or lung conditions, are advised to reduce strenuous outdoor physical activities. The NEA also recommends that people keep windows closed when the air quality is poor and use air purifiers if necessary to maintain a healthy indoor environment.
As the risk of haze continues, the government is working with regional partners to address the root causes of the forest fires. Officials have reminded the public to stay updated through official channels and to follow health advisories to protect themselves from the effects of the smoke.
