Singapore Announces Salary Increases for Political Office Holders
The Singapore government has announced a significant adjustment to the salaries of its political office holders. Starting October 15, the pay for ministers and other government leaders will increase, with the Prime Minister’s annual salary set to rise by 64 percent to S$3.6 million.
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong addressed the decision, explaining that the salary hike is a necessary step for the country. He stated that competitive pay is essential to attract and retain high-quality talent within the government ranks, ensuring that the nation continues to be led by capable individuals.
This adjustment is part of the government's long-standing approach to public sector compensation. The policy aims to keep political salaries comparable to those in the private sector, which the government argues helps to prevent corruption and maintains a high standard of public service.
While the increase is substantial, the government maintains that this strategy is vital for Singapore’s long-term stability and success. The new pay structure will take effect across the cabinet and other leadership positions in the coming weeks.
