Singapore Government Acquires Lee Kuan Yew’s Family Home
The Singapore government has officially acquired the historic family home of the late founding Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew. The property, located at 38 Oxley Road, has been the subject of a long-standing public disagreement among the Lee family members regarding its future.
In a statement, the National Heritage Board announced that the government purchased the house to ensure its historical significance is preserved. The decision follows years of debate over whether the house should be demolished, as requested in Mr. Lee’s final will, or kept as a national monument.
Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, Edwin Tong, explained that the government’s acquisition allows for a thorough assessment of the site’s historical value. The authorities plan to study the property carefully before deciding on the best way to manage the site for future generations.
This move marks a significant development in a story that has captured the attention of many Singaporeans for years. The government emphasized that the acquisition was necessary to resolve the uncertainty surrounding the property and to protect it as part of Singapore’s national heritage.
As the site is now under state ownership, the government will begin the process of reviewing the building’s condition. Officials have promised to share more information about the long-term plans for the house once the assessment is complete.
