Public Transport Fares to Increase in Singapore This December
Public transport commuters in Singapore will face higher costs starting from December 26. The Public Transport Council has announced that bus and train fares will increase by up to 13 cents for adult passengers. This adjustment is part of the annual fare review exercise aimed at ensuring the long-term sustainability of the public transport system.
The decision to raise fares follows a significant rise in global energy prices and operational costs. According to officials, the costs of electricity and diesel, which are essential for running buses and trains, have remained high. These expenses, along with the rising cost of manpower, have put pressure on public transport operators to maintain service quality.
To help manage the impact of these changes, the government will provide additional subsidies to the public transport operators. These subsidies are intended to keep the fare increase lower than what would be required to cover the full rise in operating costs. The government also continues to offer various concession schemes for students, senior citizens, and lower-income households.
Commuters are encouraged to plan their travel and consider using monthly travel passes if they travel frequently. The authorities have emphasized that the fare adjustment is necessary to continue investing in new buses, trains, and infrastructure improvements to provide a reliable and efficient network for all residents.
