NTU to Phase Out AI Detection Tools by 2027

Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has announced that it will stop using its internal artificial intelligence (AI) detection software starting in 2027. The university made this decision after concluding that current technology is not reliable enough to accurately prove cases of academic dishonesty.

As AI tools like ChatGPT become more common, many educational institutions have struggled to monitor student work. NTU officials explained that these detectors often produce "false positives," where human-written work is incorrectly flagged as AI-generated. Because of these errors, the university believes the tools are no longer a fair way to assess students.

Moving forward, NTU plans to change how it evaluates student assignments. Instead of relying on software to catch cheating, the university will focus on different assessment methods. This may include more in-class assignments, oral presentations, and projects that require students to show their critical thinking process rather than just submitting a final written paper.

This shift reflects a broader trend in Singapore’s education sector, as schools adapt to the presence of advanced technology. By moving away from detection tools, NTU hopes to encourage students to use AI responsibly as a learning aid, while ensuring that academic integrity remains a priority through more traditional and verified methods of testing.
