Temasek Must Operate Without Political Influence, Says Minister Shanmugam
Singapore’s Minister for Home Affairs and Law, K. Shanmugam, recently emphasized the importance of independence for state-owned investment company Temasek. He stated that Temasek and its portfolio companies must be free to make commercial decisions based on business logic, without the fear of political interference.
During a recent discussion, the Minister explained that the government does not direct the daily investment choices of Temasek. He noted that if the government were to influence these business decisions, it could damage the company’s reputation and its ability to perform well in the global market. The goal is to ensure that the firm remains focused on long-term value creation.
Mr. Shanmugam also addressed concerns about the relationship between the government and the investment firm. He clarified that while the government is the sole shareholder, it maintains a clear distance from the company’s specific investment strategies. This structure is designed to protect Singapore’s financial reserves and ensure that decisions are made by professional managers rather than politicians.
This principle of commercial independence is seen as a key reason for Temasek’s success over the decades. By keeping politics separate from business, the firm can pursue opportunities that best serve its financial objectives. This approach remains a cornerstone of Singapore’s economic strategy as the country navigates an increasingly complex global financial landscape.
