Singapore’s Public Transport Network to Expand with New Rail Lines
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has announced significant updates to Singapore’s public transport system. Over the next decade, the government plans to open several new MRT lines and extend existing ones. These projects aim to make travel easier and faster for residents living in the heartlands, ensuring that eight out of ten households will be within a ten-minute walk of a train station by 2030.
One of the most anticipated developments is the completion of the Cross Island Line. This new line will connect the eastern, western, and north-eastern parts of Singapore, providing a direct route for commuters who currently have to transfer between multiple lines. Officials state that this will significantly reduce travel time for thousands of daily passengers and help ease congestion on the existing North-South and East-West lines.
In addition to new rail lines, the LTA is investing in greener technology to support the nation’s sustainability goals. The government has committed to replacing all public buses with electric or hybrid models by 2040. This initiative is part of the Singapore Green Plan, which focuses on reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality in urban areas.
These infrastructure improvements come at a time when Singapore is seeing a steady increase in public transport usage. By upgrading the rail network and adopting cleaner energy, the authorities hope to encourage more people to choose public transport over private cars. These changes are expected to support the country’s long-term growth and improve the daily lives of all commuters.
