ÖBB raises prices - traveling by train has now become more expensive
The Austrian Federal Railways ÖBB announced that train travel in Austria will become more expensive starting next December. The company is offering a new winter timetable that promises additional services, but it also includes a rise in ticket prices. According to General Director Andreas Matthä, long-distance trips will increase by nearly 30 percent, but prices will be adjusted upwards. The percentage increase has not yet been revealed, but it is expected to align with inflation rates.
The company is facing significant economic pressures. Inflation, recession, and government austerity measures are forcing ÖBB to cut costs. Several projects have been postponed, while the company aims to achieve annual savings of up to 300 million euros. An internal program to increase efficiency is also expected to yield additional savings ranging from 200 to 300 million euros.
Despite these financial constraints, ÖBB plans to continue investing in the future. In 2025, approximately 3.2 billion euros will be spent on infrastructure projects, and more than 100 new trains are scheduled to be purchased by 2026. These steps aim to improve the railway network and increase passenger capacity in the long term.
However, criticisms are rising regarding what is seen as unfair treatment among transportation sectors. While trucks and airlines continue to benefit from tax privileges, railways face increasing costs, particularly due to rising traction energy prices. This has sparked discussions about the competitiveness of sustainable transport modes.
For travelers, the changes mean both positives and negatives at the same time: more routes and improved services on the way, but traveling by train will cost more soon. The value of the increase that passengers will bear is expected to become clear in the coming weeks.
