South Africa’s Largest Drone Exported Abroad While Local Military Remains Without
A significant piece of South African military technology is currently being used abroad instead of at home. The Milkor 380, which is the largest drone ever built by a South African company, is now officially in operation for a customer in the Middle East. This development comes four years after the aircraft was first introduced to the market.
Despite the drone’s advanced capabilities, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has not yet purchased any units. Industry experts suggest that the primary reason for this is the country's current financial situation. The SANDF is facing significant budget constraints, which has limited its ability to invest in new, high-tech military equipment.
The Milkor 380 is designed for long-range surveillance and reconnaissance missions. Its ability to stay in the air for extended periods makes it a valuable tool for modern defense. While the manufacturer has successfully secured international interest, the lack of local support highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the South African defense industry in supplying its own national military.
As the company continues to focus on international exports, the question of local military modernization remains a topic of debate. For now, the Milkor 380 will continue to fly for foreign forces, serving as an example of South African engineering success that is currently beyond the reach of the country's own defense budget.
