New Digital Health Unit Launched to Improve Safety in South African Mines
The University of Venda (UNIVEN) has officially launched a new research unit dedicated to improving health and safety in the mining industry. This project is a collaboration between the university, the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC), and Mintek, a national mineral research organization.
The new unit will focus on creating advanced digital tools to protect mine workers. By using artificial intelligence (AI) and predictive analytics, researchers hope to identify health risks before they become serious problems. These technologies will help monitor the working environment more effectively than traditional methods.
Occupational health remains a critical issue in South Africa’s mining sector, which employs thousands of people across the country. The initiative aims to modernize how companies track the well-being of their staff, ensuring that workers are protected from long-term health complications related to their jobs.
This partnership combines academic research with practical industrial application. By integrating digital surveillance systems into mine operations, the project seeks to set a new standard for safety protocols. The collaboration is expected to provide long-term benefits for both the mining workforce and the national economy.
