MTN Reports Millions of Unregistered SIM Cards in South Africa

South Africa’s telecommunications industry is facing a significant challenge regarding the registration of mobile phone users. MTN, one of the country’s largest network providers, recently revealed that it distributes approximately 90 million SIM cards every year. This is a high number, considering the total population of South Africa is only about 65 million people.

Company officials have expressed concern about the quality of their current user database. According to MTN, a large portion of these SIM cards are not properly registered. This issue makes it difficult for mobile operators to keep accurate records of who is using their services across the country.

In South Africa, the Regulation of Interception of Communications and Provision of Communication-Related Information Act (RICA) requires all mobile users to register their SIM cards with their personal details. The goal of this law is to prevent criminal activity and help law enforcement track illegal use of mobile devices.

MTN suggests that the high volume of SIM cards entering the market has led to a system that is "riddled with bad registrations." This means that many SIM cards are either linked to incorrect information or are not registered at all, which creates a security risk for the network and the public.

As the industry moves forward, mobile operators will likely face more pressure to improve their verification processes. Ensuring that every SIM card is correctly registered remains a top priority for both the government and telecommunications companies to maintain safety and order in the digital space.
