Today's news: Durban court to fast-track deportation of Malawian nationals

A priority court in Durban is set to speed up the deportation of nearly 2,000 Malawian nationals found without valid documents. Meanwhile, the South African government has issued a stern warning against xenophobic violence and the spread of fake news targeting immigrants.

South African authorities have moved to establish a priority court in Durban specifically to fast-track the deportation of Malawian nationals. Official records show that 1,876 individuals were found to be in the country without valid documentation. To date, 676 people have already returned to Malawi through voluntary repatriation, which is the process of a person choosing to return to their home country.

International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola addressed the Commonwealth Africa Speakers’ Conference to deliver a blunt warning against xenophobia. Lamola condemned vigilantism and the spread of fake news intended to fuel anti-immigrant sentiment. He emphasized the need to prevent violence and maintain order while addressing immigration concerns.
