South Africa Calls for Global South to Lead in Future Technology
South Africa has officially called for nations within the Global South to take a more active role in the development of new technologies. The appeal was made during a recent international visit to Shanghai, China, where South African officials emphasized that developing countries should no longer just be consumers of technology created elsewhere.
Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Blade Nzimande, stated that countries in the Global South must become producers and owners of emerging technologies. By doing so, these nations can better address their own unique challenges and ensure that the benefits of scientific progress are shared more equally across the world.
The initiative aims to reduce the reliance of developing nations on technology imports from wealthier, industrialized countries. South African leaders believe that by investing in local research and innovation, the Global South can build a more independent and sustainable future for its citizens.
This call to action highlights South Africa’s commitment to strengthening international partnerships, particularly with other emerging economies. The government plans to encourage more collaboration in science and technology to ensure that the digital future includes the voices and needs of all nations, not just the most powerful ones.
