Migration is a Shared Continental Challenge, Says Minister Lamola
South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, has addressed the growing issue of migration across the continent. He emphasized that the movement of people is not a problem that South Africa should face alone, but rather a shared responsibility for all African nations.
Recent data highlights the scale of this trend, revealing that nearly six in ten Africans between the ages of 18 and 25 have considered moving to another country. For many young people, the primary motivation for leaving their homes is the search for better economic opportunities and a more stable future.
Minister Lamola explained that the desire to emigrate is often driven by high unemployment rates and limited prospects in many home countries. Because these challenges exist across the continent, he argued that African leaders must work together to create better conditions for their citizens rather than leaving individual countries to manage the pressure of migration by themselves.
As South Africa continues to navigate the complexities of regional migration, the government is calling for stronger cooperation among African states. The focus remains on finding sustainable solutions that address the root causes of why so many young people feel the need to leave their countries in search of a better life.
