Fine Dust Increases Risk of Psoriasis, a Skin Disease Beyond Just Lung Conditions
Recent large-scale domestic research has revealed that fine dust has a serious negative impact not only on respiratory health but also on skin health. In particular, it has been confirmed that fine dust can be a direct cause of the onset and worsening of symptoms of 'psoriasis,' a skin disease, which calls for caution.
Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease characterized by red patches and white scales on the skin. This study shows that continuous exposure to environments with high concentrations of fine dust can lead to immune system abnormalities, thereby increasing the likelihood of developing psoriasis. While fine dust has previously been known primarily as a cause of lung disease, this study has also proven its risks to skin health.
Experts advise that on days with high levels of fine dust, one should refrain from going outdoors and practice thorough personal hygiene, such as washing thoroughly after returning home. Additionally, applying plenty of moisturizer to keep the skin from drying out is also helpful for prevention.
South Korea is currently transforming into a society that is sensitive to environmental changes alongside rapid aging. The results of this study provide an important indicator of how our society should respond to environmental pollution and health issues in the future. Citizens should frequently check fine dust forecasts and practice preventive measures to protect their health.
