Seoul Metro Raises Need for Improvement in Urban Railway Electricity Tariff System
Seoul Metro recently expressed the opinion that an improvement in the electricity tariff system is necessary to resolve the difficulties in operating urban railways. The corporation explained that although urban railways are an essential means of transportation for citizens, the massive burden of electricity costs incurred during operations is having a significant impact on management.
The corporation argued that urban railways should be viewed from the perspective of industrial facilities such as data centers. It suggests that the current electricity tariff system should be adjusted more reasonably, taking into account the characteristics of facilities that consume large amounts of power for national industrial competitiveness, much like data centers.
Currently, urban railways are operated for the transportation welfare of citizens, but operating costs continue to rise due to external factors such as electricity rate hikes. Emphasizing that this cost burden could eventually fall back on citizens, the corporation has requested policy support and changes to the tariff system from the government and relevant authorities.
This proposal is drawing attention as a measure to maintain the stable operation of urban railways and the transportation convenience of citizens. Much interest is now focused on whether the government will develop a new electricity tariff policy that reflects the unique characteristics of urban railways.
