South Korean professional Go player defeated by AI while receiving a 5-stone handicap
News has recently emerged that a professional Go player affiliated with the Korea Baduk Association suffered a shocking defeat in a match against artificial intelligence (AI). The match was conducted with the professional player receiving a 5-stone handicap, meaning they started with five stones already placed on the board.
Typically, professional Go players often give handicap stones when playing against amateurs. However, in this match, the professional player was defeated despite starting with a 5-stone advantage against the AI. This case serves as further evidence that the Go-playing ability of artificial intelligence has surpassed human limitations.
The name of the professional player who participated in this match has not been disclosed. The Go community is assessing that the pace of AI development is extremely rapid, and that we have entered an era where even professional players can no longer guarantee victory against artificial intelligence.
AI technology is advancing rapidly not only in Go but across various fields. This incident provides an opportunity for many to reflect once again on how artificial intelligence is complementing or even exceeding human intellectual capabilities.
