KOTRA's 'Export Conversion' Program Faces Effectiveness Controversy

Recent analysis indicates that the performance of companies participating in the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency's (KOTRA) export conversion support program has fallen short of expectations. The program aims to help domestic-oriented companies grow into export-ready businesses.

According to the findings, approximately 30% of the companies that received support recorded export figures between only $600 and $699. Many point out that this amount is effectively far too low for these companies to establish self-sufficiency as exporters.

A bigger problem is sustainability. It was found that about 87% of the supported companies had zero export performance the following year. In other words, most cases result in one-time exports, failing to grow into long-term exporting businesses.

Based on these results, experts advise that the government's export support policies should be re-examined. Rather than simply increasing the number of export companies, there is a need for practical support measures that help companies build competitiveness in overseas markets and maintain consistent exports.

Attention is now focused on how KOTRA will reflect these results to improve its support policies. It appears that more systematic and long-term strategies must be developed for the successful overseas expansion of domestic companies.
