Overseas Branches of Domestic Banks Record 2.4 Trillion Won in Net Profit Last Year

Last year, the net profit earned by the overseas branches of Korean banks increased slightly compared to the previous year. According to data released by the Financial Supervisory Service, the net profit of domestic banks' overseas branches reached a total of 2.4 trillion won.

This increase in profit was primarily driven by a rise in interest income. As interest rates rose globally, banks saw an increase in revenue from loans. This is interpreted as a positive sign that Korean banks are gradually establishing a presence in overseas markets.

Currently, domestic banks are actively expanding their overseas operations, focusing on the fast-growing Southeast Asian region. In particular, they are diversifying their profit structures by expanding financial services for local customers in countries such as Vietnam and Indonesia.

However, along with the increase in profits, risk factors also exist. As economic conditions in some countries become unstable, concerns have been raised about the need to prepare for the possibility of loan defaults. Consequently, banks are focusing on management, such as increasing loan-loss provisions to prevent unexpected losses.

The Financial Supervisory Service plans to continue monitoring the financial health of domestic banks' overseas branches closely. It intends to maintain thorough supervision and support to ensure that Korean banks can grow stably and remain competitive in international markets.
