Pfizer Korea Receives Domestic Approval for RSV Vaccine to Protect Infants
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety recently officially approved 'Abrysvo,' a respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine from Pfizer Korea. This vaccine has been approved for administration to pregnant women and the elderly.
RSV is a virus that can cause serious respiratory illnesses such as pneumonia or bronchiolitis in infants and young children. When administered to pregnant women, this vaccine allows antibodies to be passed to the fetus, effectively protecting infants up to six months of age from RSV infection.
Additionally, the vaccine can be administered to individuals aged 60 and older. As the elderly have weaker immune systems and can experience severe symptoms when infected with RSV, this approval is expected to contribute to the health management of the elderly population.
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety stated that this vaccine will play an important role in protecting the respiratory health of infants, young children, and the elderly in Korea. Pfizer Korea plans to proceed with the necessary procedures for the domestic supply of the vaccine.
The introduction of this vaccine provides a new option for parents concerned about their infants' health and for disease prevention among the elderly. Further information regarding specific vaccination schedules and target groups is expected to be announced in the future.
