Suspicion of 'False Closure' in Jeju Missing Person Case… Controversy Over Poor Police Investigation
A police officer in charge of a recent missing person case in Jeju Island is facing significant controversy following allegations that they falsely closed the case. The officer, affiliated with the Jeju Seobu Police Station, is being criticized for failing to properly investigate and prematurely closing the case of Jang Mi-ran, who went missing in Hallim-eup, Jeju City, last May.
According to reports, the officer allegedly filed a false report stating that the missing person had been in contact with her family, thereby closing the case. However, it turned out that no contact with the missing person had actually been confirmed, which left the investigation into her disappearance in a state of neglect for an extended period.
This incident has severely undermined public trust in the police's missing person investigation system. Despite the critical importance of initial responses in missing person cases, the fact that the officer in charge manipulated the investigation process has come as a great shock to the public.
Political circles have also expressed strong concern regarding this situation. Representative Park Jie-won strongly criticized the police for such poor investigative practices, pointing out that it was an act that ignored the suffering of the missing person's family.
Currently, police authorities are conducting an internal inspection of the officer in question and are investigating the exact circumstances of the incident. There are growing calls for this case to serve as a catalyst for improving internal police investigative practices and re-evaluating the entire system for investigating missing persons.
