People Power Party Rejects Lee Jae-myung's Constitutional Amendment Proposal as 'Premature'

A debate has erupted in political circles after Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, recently mentioned a constitutional amendment to change the presidential term to a four-year renewable term. The proposal aims to increase the continuity of state affairs by shifting from the current five-year single-term system to a four-year term that allows for one reelection.

In response, Jang Dong-hyeok, a Supreme Council member of the People Power Party, expressed strong concerns. Meeting with reporters on the 17th, Jang argued that "now is not the time to discuss constitutional amendments," asserting that the political sphere should focus more on resolving livelihood issues.

Furthermore, Jang expressed skepticism, citing Lee's past remarks. He pointed out that Lee had previously stated he had no intention of seeking reelection, raising suspicions that the current proposal for constitutional amendment may be politically motivated.

Currently, the ruling People Power Party maintains the position that discussions on constitutional amendment are untimely. On the other hand, the opposition party insists that such an amendment is essential for changing the national system, suggesting that conflict within political circles is likely to persist for the time being.
