Presidential Office Demands Official Apology from Ukraine Regarding North Korean Prisoners of War
The Presidential Office recently expressed strong regret over the attitude of the Ukrainian government. This conflict arose during the process of repatriating two North Korean soldiers captured by the Ukrainian military to South Korea. The Presidential Office claimed that the Ukrainian side violated an initial private agreement and released information that was contrary to the facts.
The incident began when the Ukrainian side claimed that 'there was no private agreement' regarding the repatriation of the North Korean prisoners. In response, the Presidential Office pointed out that the Ukrainian side had requested confidentiality in the first place, only to later make a false announcement denying it.
During a briefing on the 27th, an official from the Presidential Office criticized this behavior by the Ukrainian government as an act that betrays trust. Furthermore, the official emphasized that an official explanation and a sincere apology from the Ukrainian side are essential regarding this situation.
Currently, the South Korean government is cooperating closely with the international community regarding the issue of North Korean troops being deployed to Russia. However, as the gap in positions between the two countries over this prisoner repatriation issue widens, there are concerns about potential diplomatic friction.
Attention is now focused on how the Ukrainian government will respond to this demand. The government stated that it will respond cautiously to ensure that this incident does not have a negative impact on the relationship between the two countries.
