Financial Authorities to Overhaul 'Sandbox' System for Fintech Startups
South Korean financial authorities are overhauling the 'Financial Regulatory Sandbox' system to support the growth of fintech startups. This reorganization aims to help companies with innovative ideas enter the market more easily and quickly.
One of the most significant changes is the immediate granting of 'exclusive operating rights.' Moving forward, once a fintech company is designated as a sandbox operator, it will immediately gain the right to operate the service exclusively. This will allow startups to launch their businesses stably while protecting their ideas.
Additionally, the criteria for 'financial soundness reviews,' which check a company's financial status, will be lowered. Previously, early-stage startups with insufficient capital faced difficulties participating in the sandbox due to strict screening. However, the threshold will now be lowered by placing more weight on technological capabilities and service innovation.
A system will also be established to provide benefits during the formal licensing process for operators with outstanding performance. If a service's safety and utility are proven through the sandbox, the operator will be able to receive approval under faster and more favorable conditions when officially launching their financial business later.
