Industry Worries Over Power Grid Shortages: What Is the Solution?
With the recent rapid growth of the artificial intelligence (AI) industry, electricity demand is exploding. Consequently, expanding the power grid to ensure a stable supply of electricity has emerged as a national priority. However, unexpected difficulties are arising in the process of expanding the grid.
The biggest problem hindering grid expansion is not funding, but 'time.' Cables, which are core components needed to build power grids, take two to three years to arrive on-site after being ordered. Furthermore, large transformers can take up to four years from production to installation.
This situation is becoming a significant burden for major domestic companies with high power consumption, such as those in the semiconductor industry. Companies that use a large amount of electricity, like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, could face disruptions in their production facility operations if a stable power supply is not guaranteed.
The government and relevant industries are focusing on developing measures to improve the power equipment supply chain and shorten production lead times. Beyond simply investing money, it is urgent to resolve component supply issues and manage power infrastructure efficiently.
The power grid issue is a critical matter directly linked to the competitiveness of Korean industry. Many companies and investors are watching closely to see how quickly the government can resolve the challenge of power grid expansion.
